Many therapists fear that, with the popularity of online gambling games among young people these days, they will soon see a new wave of patients. Therapists say that, nowadays, most of their patients who are addicted to gambling today are older people. Adults generally seek out treatment for online gambling games addictions and other gambling problems when they are faced with the possibility of divorce or total bankruptcy, or when they have had legal problems related to an online gambling games addiction or another other type of gambling dependence. However, therapists warn, the next generation of gambling patients are likely to be much younger: in college or even in high school. These young people are more likely to partake in online gambling games, which experts say are more conducive to addiction, than their older counterparts. According to a recent study by the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg Public Policy Center, there was been a 20 percent increase gambling activities among young people in the last year. About 2.9 million people from age 14 to 22 gamble once a week or more. “The rising rate of card playing and overall gambling is worrisome,” said Dan Romer, who directed the UPenn survey. “Young people are more prone to addiction, and increased exposure to gambling during the adolescent years increases the chances of developing gambling-related problems.”
